Purpose Beyond the Role
Set aside 20–30 minutes. This is an exercise in honest self-examination, not a test with one required answer.
1. My Roles
List three roles you occupy. For each, describe how it lets you contribute. Which contributions would matter if your title changed?
2. What I Want and Why
Write three desires. For each, ask why it matters and whether it points toward a deeper need or value.
3. Remove the Audience
What would you still do if nobody watched, praised or rewarded you? When have you felt useful without feeling particularly happy?
4. Values That Travel
Choose three values (such as honesty, compassion, courage, curiosity, service or responsibility). Give one concrete action that expresses each one.
5. My Provisional Purpose Statement
Complete in your own words: At this stage of my life, I want to use my attention, choices and abilities to ... so that ... while remaining faithful to ...
6. Seven-Day Experiment
Choose one small action that expresses one value without requiring recognition. Decide when you will do it and what completion looks like.
7. Reflection After Seven Days
What did you do? What did you learn? Did the action still matter without applause? What will you repeat or change?
Remember: Your purpose statement is a working hypothesis you can revise as you grow.
