Finding Yourself Through Purpose • Step 5 of 12
What Was Given to You — and What Did You Choose?
This worksheet helps you separate inherited beliefs from consciously chosen values. The goal is not to reject your past, but to examine what still deserves a place in your life.
Part A — Choose One Area
Start with one area of life: success, money, family, religion, work, relationships, authority, health, identity, or another area that matters to you.
Which area are you examining?
Part B — Given to Me / Examined / Chosen
GIVEN TO ME
What belief, expectation, rule, or definition did you receive?
EXAMINED
Where did it come from? What evidence supports or challenges it? What emotion is attached to it?
CHOSEN
What do you consciously choose now? Keep it, modify it, or release it?
Part C — Examine Five Inherited Ideas
1. What belief did I inherit, and where might it have come from?
2. What emotion is attached to this belief?
3. What happened when I obeyed it?
4. What happened when I questioned it?
5. Would I teach this belief to a child exactly as I received it?
Part D — Keep, Modify, or Release
Which inherited idea do I want to keep exactly as it is?
Which inherited idea needs to be modified?
Which inherited idea am I ready to release?
Part E — Remove the Audience
If no parents, friends, coworkers, community, critics, or audience were watching, what would still matter to me?
Central Question
Which part of my life am I still living mainly because somebody else expected it?
Do not rush the answer. The purpose is not rebellion. The purpose is conscious ownership.
