Finding Yourself Through Purpose • Step 4 of 12

Who Is Watching the Mind? — Worksheet

This worksheet is an observation exercise, not a test. The goal is to notice what appears in your mind and create space between awareness and reaction.

Part A — Five-Minute Observation

Sit quietly for five minutes. Each time a thought, sound, sensation, memory, emotion, plan, or judgment appears, silently say: Noticed.

What appeared without my deliberately creating it?
What was easiest to observe?
What pulled me into the story most strongly?
Could I notice attention wandering?
What changed when I became aware that my attention had wandered?

Part B — Awareness Before Reaction

Think of a recent moment when you reacted quickly. What happened?
What thought or emotion appeared first?
What did that signal encourage you to do?
If you had noticed the signal before acting, what other response might have been possible?

Part C — Examine the Observer

Am I examining this honestly, or am I protecting a conclusion I already want?
Which identity or label do I most strongly defend?
Can I observe that identity without assuming it is the whole of who I am?

Central Question

If I can notice my thoughts, emotions, sensations, roles, memories, and reactions, what do I mean when I say ā€œIā€?

Do not force an answer. Let the question remain open if necessary. The purpose is awareness, examination, and conscious choice.
